Bhai Kanhaiya Ji

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji (1648–1718)

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji, lovingly remembered in Sindh as Khat Waro Baba and Khatwala Baba, was one of the most revered Sikhs known for his unparalleled spirit of service and compassion. He was born in the village of Sodara, District Sialkot (now in Pakistan), to Mata Sundari Ji and Shri Nathu Ram Ji. A devoted Sikh of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, he was later entrusted by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji with the responsibility of establishing the Sevapanthi or Adanshahi order of selfless service.

A Life of Service

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji dedicated his entire life to nishkam sewa—selfless service. On the battlefield, he would carry water and tend to the wounds of the injured, without any distinction of friend or foe. To him, humanity was one, and all were equal in the eyes of the Divine.

Through the guidance of Bhai Nannu Ji, Bhai Kanhaiya Ji first heard the sacred hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji and thereafter traveled to Anandpur Sahib to place himself in the service of the Guru. Clad in simple white garments, with a pure heart, he served tirelessly by offering water to all in need.

When some Sikhs noticed that Bhai Kanhaiya Ji was also serving the enemy soldiers, they complained to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji. When the Guru questioned him, Bhai Kanhaiya Ji humbly replied:

“O True King, I do not see a Sikh or a Muslim. To me, in every being, I behold only Your Divine form.”

Hearing this, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji was deeply pleased. The Guru not only approved of his service but also handed him a medicine box and bandages, commanding that from that day onward, Bhai Kanhaiya Ji should also tend to the wounds of the injured, along with giving them water.

Principles of Bhai Kanhaiya Ji

  • Selfless Service – Serve without expectation or reward.

  • Equality – Recognize all human beings as equal.

  • Compassionate Service – Serve with love and without discrimination.

  • Sharing with All – Whatever one has, share with others.

Final Days

In 1704, after Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji left Anandpur Sahib, Bhai Kanhaiya Ji returned to his village Urank Khuh. There, he immersed himself in devotional kirtan and service. While absorbed in divine remembrance, he peacefully departed for Sachkhand, merging forever in the eternal presence of the Guru.
