Bhai Mati Das Ji

Bhai Mati Das Ji

Bhai Mati Das Ji belonged to village Karyala in district Jhelum. His father, Bhai Nand Lal Ji, was a commander in the army of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. From an early age, Bhai Mati Das Ji was deeply devoted to the Guru’s house. When he came to Baba Bakala for the darshan of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, he offered his entire life in service to the Guru. The Guru appointed him as Diwan (minister).

He accompanied Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji on missionary journeys to Bihar, Bengal, and Assam. In 1675, when Guru Sahib travelled to Delhi to defend the Hindu faith against the tyranny of Aurangzeb, Bhai Mati Das Ji remained by his side with full loyalty.

In Delhi, Aurangzeb demanded that Guru Sahib embrace Islam. When the Guru refused, his devoted Sikhs were also pressured. Bhai Mati Das Ji was told by the Qazi: “Abandon Sikh faith and accept Islam, and you will be granted many comforts.” But Bhai Sahib fearlessly replied that no worldly temptations could ever make him forsake the path of the Guru.

The Qazi then ordered that Bhai Mati Das Ji be sawn alive. Bound in stocks, he was cut in half with a saw. Throughout this unbearable torture, Bhai Sahib remained immersed in the remembrance of Waheguru. His unshakable faith and calm spirit turned this painful execution into a timeless testimony of courage.

Bhai Mati Das Ji’s martyrdom is unparalleled in world history. It inspired countless people to grow stronger in their devotion towards Sikhism, realizing that the Sikh faith alone gives the strength to face death without fear.

✨ The supreme sacrifice of Bhai Mati Das Ji teaches us that giving one’s life for truth and righteousness is the greatest victory of all.
